In June I have a very special cousin come to see me from CA. It had been well over 20 years since we had seen each other. She only got to stay a few days. It was typical June hot in Texas! And the poor city girl didn't have a bit of luck with bugs either!! Between bee stings and the Tx size skeeters, buy the time she got home she was one big bug bite!!
But the trip wasn't a total loss, one of the things that she did want to do was go see the Sam Houston Museum. So the day she was leaving we got up early and headed south to stop in Huntsville and see old Sam Houston before going on to put her on the plane in Houston.
While I have lived in Tx for almost 35 years I had never stopped there. In 2006 I had worked in Houston and traveled back home on the weekends so I had driven by that statue many times...... just never stopped.
I have to admit that history has never been very intriguing for me. I guess it's not the history but maybe the studying that I never cared for. But the Cuz was excited about going and I knew I could enjoy it too. And I did have my little Jillian to keep me company and entertained.
It was raining when we got on the road, just a gentle rain, all the way to Huntsville. But it stopped just as we pulled up and found our parking place. Great!! I could take the cameras!!
One of the first things we saw was a small family of chickens with new babies! They were just getting started looking for food as we got there. So shutter bug away!! I did! They have several houses that the Houston family lived in over the years as well as out buildings and gardens, vegetable and herb. The blacksmith shop and a large indoor museum with all kinds of information and articles belonging to Sam and his family and friends. I have to admit I truly enjoyed the time I spent there.
Hope you enjoy some of the pictures I got. And if your ever in Tx I would strongly recommend that you stop and take a gander at the great BIG Sam Houston, and maybe learn something about American history! :-)
